Clayton County was first permanently settled in 1821, as a result of the Treaty of Indian Springs, in which the Creek Indians ceded a vast portion of their land to the state of Georgia. Clayton County was created in 1858 and was named after Augustin S. Clayton, a distinguished judge of the Western Circuit of Georgia. Jonesboro, then known as Leaksville, developed into a small, rural community.
Many local residents believe that Jonesboro was the inspiration for Tara and other locations in “Gone with the Wind.” Margaret Mitchell’s grand father was an early Jonesboro resident and she often visited Jonesboro when she was growing up. Jonesboro celebrates their role in the film with the Road to Tara Museum. The museum has original props, costume reproductions, a foreign edition library and an extensive photo gallery, which offers a behind the scenes look at the book and making of the movie. Today, the Jonesboro area retains much of its past. The city is filled with historic plantation homes and the Patrick R. Cleburne Confederate Memorial Cemetery, which is the resting place for nearly a thousand Confederate soldiers who fell during the Battle of Jonesboro in 1864. Jonesboro resident enjoy the small town southern charm of their close-knit community, while enjoying a close proximity to a very popular metropolitan area. The city of Atlanta gained international recognition while hosting the 1996 Olympics and since has been hailed as one of the best new American cities. Jonesboro residents are able to work or take advantage of the world-class shopping, entertainment and cultural opportunities in metropolitan Atlanta, just a 20-minute drive away. |
